Generally, we all fall into one of three categories of body types, which are determined by our genes and the hormones we produce. Your ability to metabolize food, tendency to build muscle, retain fat and natural physical appearance are a consequence of your body type. Therefore, your body "morph" category can heavily influence your ability to achieve your fitness goal. The three body types are ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph.

Ectomorphs typically have a fast metabolism, and lean or "skinny" appears. They are your friends who seemingly can eat whatever they want without gaining weight. However, an endomorph also has difficulty building muscle. Their bodies burn calories at a much higher rate. Although weight-loss isn’t typically an issue for these individuals, gaining muscle usually is. If you fall into this category, you should consume foods higher in carbs and protein. Your workout routine should involve a limited amount of cardiovascular exercise, and you should focus on weight training using compound movements.

Mesomorphs are the middle category. A large bone structure and muscular build are hallmarks of their body type. People often refer to them as natural athletes. Mesomorphs can achieve their fitness objectives quicker than most because their bodies are more responsive. Gaining muscle and losing fat occurs relatively quickly for mesomorphs. Their biggest hurdles are consistency and the right overall diet and fitness plan. If you are interested in maintaining a lean muscular physique as a mesomorph, complex carbohydrates, moderate cardio, and a weight training regimen are your friends.

Endomorphic body types have a natural tendency toward higher percentages of body fat. This body type is characterized by a slower metabolism and a more rounded and curvy appearance. If you are interested in maintaining your current physique or losing a few pounds as an endomorph, you should avoid refined carbs like white bread and pasta. Alternatively, it would help if you opted for foods high in "good" fats, lean protein, fruit, and vegetables. When it comes to physical activity, endomorphs benefit from a consistent cardio program and respond well to weight training.
